Lighten Up
While the dog days of summer are upon us, nothing lightens up the look and feel of a bed, like a bleached white matelassé coverlet. I just love the look. Crisp. Clean. Summery.
Matelassé, from the French word matelasser, which means to pad, cushion or quilt, is actually a single layer of fabric. Through the process of weaving the intricate designs, and then shrinking the yarns, the fabric achieves its beautiful, characteristic puffy appearance.
Go ahead. Don’t be shy. Use ‘em as a blanket. We always sleep under our matelassé coverlets in the summer. They’re just the right weight, and launder beautifully. I even think the texture improves with each wash. I love using vintage linens, and find the addition of a crisp, cool cotton sheet makes an oh so perfect end to a hot summer day.
Happy decorating!

Hi Nancy! That’s an old Ralph Lauren quilt. I love it too….it works everywhere! When I spot a true classic…I grab it! Thanks very much! Love, Nora
