Portraits: A re-imagined Christmas tale
Two important things I like to keep in mind: Follow your passion, and follow your friends on Facebook. I met my friend Mark on Facebook earlier this year through our mutual love of American Country. I liked his postings, and he consistently liked mine. And voila, a friendship was born!
And when that love of American Country resulted in a beautiful book that re-imagined and re-told the story of Clement Moore’s, The Night Before Christmas, through the eyes and sensibility of three primitive country house lovers, Mark Moulton, Noel Runnals 3, and Verge Prior III – I certainly was intrigued.
The three dear friends met at folk art shows they attended in the late 90’s; Noel and Verge created and sold Paper Mache boxes and hand-painted signs, while Mark authored and promoted his first children’s book, A Snowman Named Bob (the first of 22 published books). Since then, Noel and Verge purchased the Circa 1820 catalog, that is now Circa Home Living.
Their mutual love of primitive homes and photography led them to discussions of collaborating on a book, but with busy schedules and the juggling of numerous independent projects, the collaboration remained a dream until last year when a road trip changed all that.
A serendipitous brainstorming led to a revelation (I just love when that happens) – to tell Clement Moore’s classic tale through photography and decorating tips from an authentic American primitive point of view. All three shared their best photography from beloved New England locations: Old Sturbridge Village and Walker Homestead in Massachusetts, Dresden House in Maine, and Sparrowood in Connecticut.
Bottom line: This book will put a big smile on your face. Mark, Noel, and Verge honor Clement Moore’s original intent and add a warm and fuzzy American Country twist that communicates a heartwarming message of wonder and Christmas spirit for the young and the young at heart.
