Busy Sidewalks
Christmas in Connecticut would not be Christmas without a trip into New York City. Having lived in Fairfield County for most of my life, I’ve been grateful for it’s proximity, about a 75 minute drive, to the Big Apple. My perfect day in midtown consists of lots of walking, window-shopping, a show and a fabulous dinner. This past weekend with The Boys, was no exception.
We truly covered a lot of Manhattan ground, and pretty much hoofed it everywhere! Some of the highlights:
Bergdorf Goodman
Bergdorf’s windows are so stunningly creative and extravagant that it’s a must-see every year. A quick pop up to the 7th floor, where you can find everything for gracious living, is beautifully styled with all kinds of Natural Curiosities – from framed scarab beetles to chunks of minerals crafted into vessels, or mounted onto large glass blocks. Don’t leave empty handed…I picked up a little something at the Jo Malone fragrance counter and left with a little bag tied with a pretty green velvet ribbon. The perfect treat.
Fifth Avenue
Right outside Bergdorf’s, suspended above the intersection of 5th Avenue and 57th Street, an enormous lit snowflake has marked the holiday season in NYC for as long as I can remember! All the storefronts are decorated to the nines – one more sparklier than the next!
For a little solace and reflection, stop into St. Thomas Church (5th and 53rd) and take in the beautifully majestic architecture and understated Christmas décor of simple greens.
Rockefeller Center
You know you’re nearing Rockefeller Center when you find that your brisk walk has turned into a slow-mo shuffle in a sea of humanity. But how can you not go and see “The Tree”?! No matter how many times we make our way there, it’s always a beautiful sight to see. While you’re in the area, be sure to stop into Teuscher Chocolates on the plaza, and hand pick your choice of all-natural Swiss made chocolates. Yum!
Showtime
Whether it’s catching the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall, enjoying a Broadway Show, or delighting to The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, taking in a show during the holiday season is truly a must do main event to plan the day around.
Rizzoli Books
Now at Broadway and 26th Street, Rizzoli is a treat for book lovers of the arts. Formerly on 57th Street, this bookstore has always been part of our NYC day. Without fail, I always find a few books that I’ve never seen before, and am grateful to be able to have them shipped home. Thy shall not schlep.
Rosa Mexicano
My favorite restaurant in New York for fabulous Mexican food and wonderful service! We always go to the Rosa’s on Columbus Avenue, across from Lincoln Center. The original Rosa’s is on 1st Avenue, and the newest one, that I haven’t been to, yet, is in Tribeca. When you go, which I hope you do, I highly recommend the guacamole made at your tableside and the frozen pomegranate margarita!
There’s so much to see, and it’s a wonderful time to go, sooooo, what are you waiting for? Go put on your comfy shoes and go explore!
Happy Holidays!
Love, Nora
