Getting Hammered
There’s a relay race going on right now at Connecticut Country House, with one (or 2 or 3) woody-stemmed shrubs blooming at the same time. Their volume, color, and scents make the gardens truly come alive, and the opportunities for cut bouquets abound! (Hard to take advantage of them all!)
For bouquets that’ll last longer, you’ve got to be a little heartless and smash the ends of each woody stem. This is what I do:
- Cut branches and strip bottom third of foliage.
- Cut to desired length (measure by holding stem to side of container).
- Hold stems onto a hard surface, and hammer (you can do this one stem at a time, or a bunch – whatever you’re comfortable with).
- Place in container filled with cool water.
Now find the perfect spot that needs some love and enjoy!
