The Black Dog Bowl

$48.00

Heritage. This dog bowl is from The Black Dog Tavern, Martha’s Vineyard. Here’s the backstory: “It all started with a stale donut. Full service, year-round waterfront dining in our legendary Tavern on Vineyard Haven Harbor. It was a desperately cold day in 1969. At that time, the Vineyard did not have a year-round restaurant, and Captain Robert Douglas’ repast that night was a bitter cup of coffee and a dry, packaged, store-bought donut. The Captain, unsatisfied by his “meal”, picked up a pencil and began sketching on a paper napkin. He drew a small gambrel-roofed building, which grew in stature and structure over the course of several more napkins. The end result was a restaurant that would look just right on the beach at the head of Vineyard Haven Harbor, a place where locals and visitors could meet and eat. The Captain’s excitement for his creation was contagious. Local townsfolk helped build and shingle until his sketch took real, physical shape. Locals shared their recipes for pies, chowders, and soups. When the building was completed the Captain gave his restaurant a name in honor of his faithful canine companion Black Dog.” Enough said.
