Nora Murphy has turned her passion for country house style and its embodiment—her own home in Newtown, Connecticut, and now in Hadlyme, Connecticut—into a multimedia juggernaut. Her shop, website, strong presence on social media, and increasing visibility in print media and on TV have earned Nora Murphy Country House a devoted following all over the country and around the world. She has distilled the essence of her knowledge about the fundamentals of country house style and how to achieve it in her two books—Nora Murphy's Country House Style, Making Your Home A Country House, published by Vendome Press, and Country House Living, Celebrating the Beauty of Life at Home, published by Rizzoli Books.
Nora's career is a story of her passion for interior design, the classics, and great new ideas.
Nora launched Nora Murphy Country House in 2011. The lifestyle company, with its focus on decorating, gardening, and entertaining, is the home of the 2016 Design Blogger's Conference Hall of Fame Winner For Best Overall Design Blog. She has been nominated 2 years in a row for the prestigious Amara Interior Blog Award for Best Design Inspiration Blog - USA. Nora has been an on-air Lifestyle Contributor on WFSB's popular Better Connecticut program. She has been a featured presenter at the Country Living Fairs since 2016.
As Executive Vice President of Style and Advertising at Ethan Allen, she was responsible for the brand's global style, image, and creative content—a role she left to build Nora Murphy Country House. A few years later, she consulted as the Creative Director of Ethan Allen's 328-page Muses book; guided the product design and branding of the Ethan Allen/Disney line, launched in 2016; and advised on the direction of the company's Print and Digital Advertising collateral. She has also been a Design Project Manager for Furniture at Polo Ralph Lauren Home Collection, New York.
Nora’s online shop, Hunt Club, has been going strong since 2018 featuring Nora’s first candle collection that has since grown into offering vintage finds that exude her country house lifestyle.
Wishing to offer larger country house items, she opened her first brick & mortar shop in Chester, CT called The Little Shop (named so because of the tiny nature of the space).
In light of the need for a larger space, and to accommodate the growth of The Little Shop, in the summer of 2025, The Little Shop relocated to a larger space and in a very special place—an architecturally beautiful mid-19th century house in Nora’s favorite village of Essex, CT (a charming quintessential New England Main Street on the Connecticut River that she and her family fell in love with over 40 years ago upon visiting the historic Griswold Inn). Interestingly, this Essex house has a similar floor plan and 19th c. features as that of her own home on the Connecticut River in Hadlyme, and has inspired her to create a shop interior that feels like a home—a unique shopping experience that reflects the warm and inviting country house styles as in her books.
Her favorite comment from customers: “I could live here!”

Dear Nora, right in the middle of Christmas cooking my package from you arrived. Everything was absolutely perfect! I immediately put satsumas in the shell…thankyou so much, Donna
Wonderful news! Merry Christmas Donna! Enjoy…Love, Nora
Hi Nora. You continue to inspire. I aspire to run a business one day, now that I have retired. I have a lot to learn about developing an online presence. You make it look effortless, but I know that your business is the result of years of hard work and determination. I look forward to stopping by to see your “brick and mortar” one day soon. I am a friend of Dana’s from New Fairfield, and I enjoy your beautiful book, featuring Dana’s NH “tavern” (…which I got to see firsthand! Wow!), especially on snowy or rainy days like this one. Wishing you continued success!
Gratefully,
Mary
Literally cannot wait to receive my 6 Blue Willow grill plates. I have had my eyes on them for some time, now. Love the way you displayed them on your blog. Thank you so much for parting with them. They have found a good home.
Hey Nora I fondly remember you from EthanAllen. I worked in the cafe and lived in newtown.
I just love this picture of you (top of page), good friend. In addition, your April 3 piece on flowering branches was delightful. You are inspiring in every way. Elena
Hi Nora,
Karen, formerly of Petal Pushers in Newtown. So happy to have stumbled on your site. Living on the coast of Maine, but so miss our lovely little town of Newtown. Will always be home. Glad all is well. Enjoy the summer.
