Spring Toile de Jouy
Every picture tells a story. And this beloved 18th c. French Toile de Jouy is so very special because it tells a story that I haven’t seen before in this kind of antique pictorial textile. I bought this antique French Toile de Jouy quilted cotton fragment years ago, and finally decided to frame it in a favorite early gilded wood frame and early glass (I asked my framer to be sure to keep the little bubble visible when cutting down the old glass.)
The scene takes place under an old tree, complete with leaves, vines, and birds, while a lady sits under the tree, a gentleman gifts her a bird’s nest with 3 baby birds inside! The printed cotton fabric must have been red on white background when it was new…and now over 200 years later it is a very pretty soft red/pink and creamy tea ground. This 18th c. beauty is truly a one-of-a-kind rare find. Love.
