It’s one of my secret weapons in my arsenal of decorating tips – small old Oriental carpets. They’re true classics – with a relaxed attitude. Keeping my eyes peeled at flea markets and estate sales, these old faded beauties are the perfect ‘welcome mat’ at any door in my house, especially on a rainy day like today.  The carpets are small in scale, ranging from 2 1/2 feet by 3 1/2  feet, to 3 feet by 4 feet.

The richness of the multi colors and patterns makes them extremely forgiving when tracking in dirt, and versatile when placing them, as needed, in various parts of the house – their similar color palettes and small sizes makes them completely interchangeable.  The beauty of these little old carpets is also in the ease of moving them.  Because they’re old, they’re pretty thin – making it easy for a quick cleaning by beating outside (I just snap them on the stone patio), as well as folding them up when not needed, and storing them flat in a closet or under a bed.

Depending on the condition you find them in, they can last for decades.  My little old Oriental carpet collection ranges in condition – from totally intact to frayed edges to a little threadbare in spots.  And for this country house loving gal, that patina is always welcome.

Love, Nora
